The WCS Board of School Trustees met for the regularly scheduled Work Session on Tuesday, February 17 at 4:00 p.m. at Central Office.
Academic Spotlight: Honoring Cathy Suhany for 40 Years of Service
Dr. Hoffert and the Board recognized Cathy Suhany for her 40 years of dedicated service as a school psychologist. Several of Cathy’s family members and colleagues were present to celebrate this milestone and honor her lasting impact on students and families. Mrs. Suhany also shared some insights about her role as a school psychologist.
Academic Report: Edgewood “Enabling the Future” Project
Principal JoElla Hauselman and STEM teacher Abbi Richcreek provided an update on Edgewood Middle School’s “Enabling the Future” initiative. In partnership with Grace College, Mrs. Richcreek’s middle school students collaborated to engineer a custom hand for their fellow student, Owen. The team is also now working to engineer a hand for a child in Indianapolis.
Students described the full engineering process and answered questions from the board and administration. Mrs. Richcreek shared that Owen played an active role in the process; he will be able to repair his hand if needed.
Mrs. Richcreek and Mrs. Hauselman also highlighted additional innovative programs including Go Baby Go and “Forget Princess, I Want to Be an Engineer!”
Human Resources, Financial & Operational Updates
Mr. Boyer reviewed the Human Resources report, including staffing updates and new hires, along with the financial report.
Finally, he shared final updates regarding the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE’s) Teacher Appreciation Grant (TAG) recipients. This year, 105 WCS teachers applied for the TAG funding, and 63 teachers were able to receive awards based on state limits and funding allocations. TAG followed a new statewide model requiring school districts to award no more than 20% of certified teachers (and also limited by the dollar amount awarded by the IDOE). Awards are based on measurable student growth, documented instructional impact and verified leadership.
Construction Updates
Jim LeMasters reviewed updates on current and upcoming construction projects (particularly the gymnastics renovations and Lakeview renovations).
